The Romantic Road travels through Bavaria from Wurzburg all the way to the Alps. At the northern end of the road is Rothenberg, which is said to be Germany's best preserved walled city. The wall surrounding the city is a mile long and can be walked along its entire length.

Hohenschwangau (or Schwanstein) was the home where the young Ludwig II grew up. But when Ludwig later became King, instead of living in Schwanstein, he decided to build a much bigger and more elaborate castle on the mountain above, called Neuschwanstein.

Just a 3 mile hike from Laughton en le Morthen (or 8 miles if you get lost, like we did) is Roche Abbey, an 800 year old Cistercian monastery. It was founded in 1147, but was then largely destroyed in during the Dissolution of the monasteries in 1538.
